Long time readers of the site will for sure be wondering why, for the first time since starting the site in 2009, I am writing a recap of sorts Dancing with the Stars. While the answer is pretty simple, because out of the ALL the seasons of DWTS I’ve watched, this has been the only season I’ve ever really cared about and gotten invested in.
As most people know, I am an Olympics junkie and fell in love with the awesomeness that is Meryl Davis and Charlie White, so naturally when ABC announced that they were going to continue to feed my Davis/White habit how could I say no. There was also the added fact that Winnie Cooper aka Danica McKellar and D.J. Tanner aka Candace Cameron Bure, two of my favorite TV characters from the late 80’s early 90’s, were also slated to star in season 18, I figured that I’ll tune in, watch for some entertainment, and maybe vote. Little did I know I’d soon become so mesmerized with one couple that Monday nights became my “do not bother me, DWTS is on” night.
The couple that stole my attention is of course the now season 18 winning pair of Maksim Chmerkovskiy and Meryl Davis. It was clear from day one that this wasn’t going to be your ordinary pair of dance pro/celeb. Meryl has some dance experience being an Olympic Gold Medal Ice Dancer, but she also seemed to tame Maks’ “badboy” ways we’ve seen in seasons past. As the weeks went on, myself and viewers at home, seemed to be cheering on these partners not just because of their flawless (or nearly flawless) routines, but because it was pretty damn clear something else, whether its just a deep friendship or something more romantic, was blossoming right before our eyes every week.
Leading up to tonight’s season finale, it became clear that this race was going come down to Maks/Meryl and Derek Hough and Paralympian Amy Purdy. Amy Purdy, who is a double amputee, was inspiring to watch as she took every challenge including a back injury and tackled it, so it was natural that she would be the rival to Meryl’s charm. The underdog of the season who I personally did not think would make it this far was Cameron Bure and her partner Mark Ballas, after beating out James Maslow to land in the top three, Candace left the dance floor in 3rd place.
After 13 seasons and coming so close four times, Maksim Chmerkovskiy can finally be called a Dancing with the Stars winner along with his partner Meryl. This has been a long time coming for Maks and after watching these past 10 weeks and I say this as a long time fan of dance, I have never seen someone work so hard and give everything he had to do right by his partner.
Season 19 of Dancing with the Stars will air this fall on ABC with new celebs and possibly new judges.
